Clausthal University of Technology (TUC)

TUCs group of Functional Layers integrated in the Faculty of Natural and Materials Sciences and the Energy Research Center Lower Saxony (EFZN), has a long and successful experience in co-ordination and participation in European Research projects. TUC has high skills in production, characterisation and application of ceramic materials, in production of MEAs for SOFCs and in modern preparation methods for ceramic layers. Sonochemical and sono-Electrochemical methods are used for the preparation of nanosized materials for application e.g. as electrocatalysts. Other relevant activities are surface modification of ceramics, transport properties in oxide ceramic materials and electrochemical deposition methods as well as corrosion.

Equipment:

Thermogravimetric analysis under different condition of samples with mass of up to 2 g. Several high temperature furnaces with the possibility to be used under certain atmosphere are available. Characterisation methods such as SEM/EDX, XRD, SIMS/SNMS, cyclic voltametry, impedance spectroscopy can be applied in TUC. Thermal expansion measurement up to 1600 °C. MEA preparation equipment, screen printing, spin coating, electrophoretic deposition in constant voltage or constant current mode, equipment for sono(electrochemical) deposition, Zeta-potential and particle size measurement, automated testing facilities for half cells, complete cells as well as for SOFC-stacks.

Role in the project:

Mainly characterisation of the used materials: Thermal expansion coefficient , (Inter)-diffusion studies, accelerated corrosion testing, extreme thermal shock testing, Thermal annealing (oxidation/reduction) studies of the specimens (with different levels of coating) under different atmospheres (oxidising and/or reducing gases and gas mixtures, humidity, etc.), thus providing information about the phenomena causing failure to TBCs in service life (Phase C) and experimental data needed in the modelling.

Key personnel involved:

Dr.-Ing. Georgia Sourkouni: Principal Researcher at TUC, has over 17 years of experience and is working in the area of preparation methods for ceramic powders and layers and layer by layer deposition for tailored modification of the surface of particles as well as in preparation methods for ceramic powders and functional layers.

PD Dr. Oliver Schneider: Principal Researcher at the TUC has over 18 years experience in corrosion and electrochemical characterisation methods for ceramics as well as in high temperature electrochemistry, chemical and electrochemical kinetics.

Prof. Christos Argirusis: has over 20 years experience in materials science and particularly in preparation and characterisation methods for ceramics, in high temperature electrochemistry, chemical and electrochemical kinetics, layer by layer deposition for tailored modification of the surface of particles as well as in preparation methods for ceramic powders and functional layers. He has worked on the development of oxidation protection systems for C/C-composites. Prof. Argirusis has a long and successful experience in co-ordination and participation in European as well as in national research projects.
